Literary researcher Eve Pormeister has won the Ene Mihkelson cultural interpretation award, ERR reported. The prize was presented for the eighth time on October 23 at the Estonian Literary Museum.

The award recognises Pormeister’s work interpreting and popularising literature. Her analyses connect Estonian writers with world literature and draw attention to parallels and patterns that might otherwise remain unnoticed.

Pormeister published a collection of essays, “Näen, kuulan, tunnetan” (“I see, listen, feel”), in 2021, and a new book on Estonian and translated literature is forthcoming. In recent work for the journals Looming and Akadeemia, she has written about Kairi Loog, Kristiina Ehin, Eeva Park and Gabriel García Márquez. An essay by Pormeister on the geometric and metaphysical poetry of Viivi Luik is also due to appear in the Estonian National Library’s bibliography of Luik’s work from 1962 to 2025.

The award honours outstanding writing and television or radio programmes published or broadcast in Estonian cultural media that promote book culture and literary work, analyse literature in depth and broaden understanding of contemporary Estonian culture and literature. It carries a prize of 1,000 euros.

The jury comprises Marju Lauristin, Arne Merilai, Brita Melts and Ragne Kõuts-Klemm. Previous recipients include Sveta Grigorjeva, Maarja Vaino, Mart Juur, Igor Kotjuh, Jaan Tootsen, Rein Veidemann, Aivar Kull, Henri Kõiv and Joonas Hellerma.
