Lithuanian parliament appoints Marijus Bajoras as Supreme Court justice

The Lithuanian parliament has appointed Marijus Bajoras as a justice of the Supreme Court of Lithuania, following a secret ballot where 55 lawmakers voted in favour, five opposed, and one abstained, LRT reports.

President Gitanas Nausėda’s chief advisor, Andrius Kabišaitis, previously stated that Bajoras’ experience—including judicial roles in multiple court systems, leadership positions, and expertise in civil law—made him a strong candidate. His approach to consensus-building and improving judicial practice was also highlighted as key to the nomination.

Addressing parliament, Bajoras emphasised the Supreme Court’s role in shaping legal precedent and ensuring fairness in civil and private disputes. He pledged to uphold high standards of competence and conduct, aiming to strengthen justice and human rights protections.

Bajoras, a law graduate of Vilnius University, has served as a judge on Lithuania’s Court of Appeal since 2018. His prior career includes roles in regional administrative courts, Vilnius City District Court, and the Supreme Administrative Court, as well as legal positions at Vilnius Electricity Networks and the Lithuanian Children and Youth Centre.

He is set to assume his new duties on June 30. Under Lithuanian law, Supreme Court justices are appointed and dismissed by parliament upon presidential recommendation.
