Lithuania calls for rapid expansion of European defence capabilities to complement NATO
Lithuania’s defence minister has emphasised the need to accelerate European defence capabilities as a supplement—not a duplicate—of NATO structures, following talks with the EU’s defence and space commissioner in Pabrade on Thursday.
Defence Minister Robertas Kaunas met with European Commissioner Andrius Kubilius at the General Silvestras Žukauskas Training Ground, where they discussed US contributions to European security and initiatives to strengthen the continent’s defence autonomy, the Lithuanian Ministry of National Defence reported.
Kaunas underscored that while the US remains a “cornerstone” of security for Lithuania and the wider region, Europe must take greater responsibility for its own defence. “The transatlantic link is a key pillar of our security architecture,” he said. “The US needs strong allies and a strong European NATO. Lithuania’s interest lies in rapidly expanding European defence capabilities to complement—not replicate—NATO structures.”
The minister noted ongoing US commitments, including its continued military presence in Lithuania, and urged focus on practical cooperation over “headline-grabbing statements.”
The talks also covered EU financial instruments for defence projects, with both officials agreeing on the need for faster, more effective implementation to bolster regional resilience—particularly in air defence. They further addressed the expansion of Europe’s defence industrial base, stressing the importance of scaling up production capacity within the EU.
Kubilius highlighted Lithuania’s role in safeguarding one of the EU’s longest eastern land borders. “By helping strengthen Lithuania’s defence capabilities, the European Commission contributes not only to Lithuania’s and Europe’s security but also to building a stronger European pillar within NATO,” he said.
During the visit, Kubilius toured newly opened US military infrastructure at the training ground and reviewed the activities of US forces stationed in Lithuania. American personnel briefed him on their mission and operational experience in the country. Lithuanian military drone and counter-drone systems were also demonstrated.
