Schools and teachers can help prepare a wiser and better future generation by building strong relationships with students, Andris Priekulis, head of Riga State Gymnasium No. 3, told Latvian Radio in an interview published by LSM.

Priekulis has led the gymnasium for nearly 30 years. During the period when state gymnasiums were being restored in Latvia, he was state secretary at the Ministry of Education and Science.

His remarks came as state gymnasiums marked 30 years since they resumed operating in Latvia, with celebrations held this week at Valmiera Theatre. Asked about the schools’ role and future, Priekulis said educators should consider what people will need in the years ahead.

He said learning depends on relationships between teachers and students, and described schools as having a significant ability to influence the future.

Priekulis also recalled advocating for a classical gymnasium curriculum at Riga’s former 41st Secondary School, including Latin. He said Latin is used in fields such as anatomy and law, while classical gymnasiums in pre-war Latvia also taught Ancient Greek. He said he believes this kind of education can help develop greater intellectual ability.
