Jonatan Vseviov joins Social Democrats, seeks parliament seat
Jonatan Vseviov, Estonia’s longtime Foreign Ministry secretary general and a security expert, is joining the Social Democratic Party and will run in the spring 2027 parliamentary elections, ERR reports. He will leave his government post on Thursday.
“I have devoted my life so far to preserving and developing Estonia as a diplomat and civil servant,” Vseviov said. He added that he no longer believed he could do enough in that role and had decided to leave public service, join the Social Democrats and run in the upcoming election.
Party leader Lauri Läänemets said Estonia’s security and position internationally required strong leadership. He cited Vseviov’s experience in security and foreign policy, including leading the Defence Ministry, serving as Estonia’s ambassador in Washington and heading the Foreign Ministry.
Vseviov is to submit his resignation from the secretary general’s post on Thursday.
