Latvia has temporarily restricted access from abroad to several public digital services after two critical vulnerabilities were found in PHP software, LSM reported, citing CERT.lv.

At least 165 websites belonging to state and municipal institutions were closed as a preventive measure. The restrictions were applied selectively to reduce risks and allow security updates to be installed promptly. They could remain in place until Monday, October 26, depending on the progress of the updates.

The vulnerabilities affect PHP, a programming language widely used for internet services around the world. The BBC reported that an artificial intelligence tool had uncovered the flaws. Other countries have also taken measures to protect their information systems.

LSM.lv, the Latvian Radio website and the broadcaster’s mobile app were temporarily taken offline on Wednesday evening because of the potential cybersecurity risks.
