Latvia’s Food and Veterinary Service (PVD) has detected salmonella in minced pork from Lithuania, LSM reported. The 500-gram package, batch number GM262705092339, contained Salmonella Typhimurium.
The product’s use-by date has passed and it is no longer on sale. The PVD said it had reported the finding through the European Union’s Rapid Alert System.
Salmonella bacteria cause salmonellosis, an infectious disease that mainly affects the gastrointestinal tract. Infection can result from eating contaminated animal products that have not been thoroughly cooked, or food prepared from them. It can also spread through food prepared in conditions where sanitary standards are not followed.
