Young fans helped prompt HU? to return to the stage, musician Leslie Laasner told ERR, as he discussed the band’s comeback concerts and his new album, “Viimasena peol”.
Laasner said the HU? concerts this spring and summer made him feel like a superstar, with thousands of fans singing along. He was particularly struck by the energy of young people in their twenties at the front of the crowds.
The band began sharing its music online again after fans asked why it was not available to stream and when HU? would perform. Younger producers also approached the group about remixes, collaborations and covers. Laasner said the music and lyrics had remained relevant, and that a new generation of listeners had taken them on.
He said the reunion was not an attempt to revive the band’s popularity for its own sake. Returning to the songs after about 10 years was not difficult, he added, and he enjoyed performing as part of HU?’s creative setup rather than in the solo spotlight.
HU? has received offers for next year, including performances on large stages in Estonia, but the group plans to accept only some of them. Laasner said the band would not resume full-time activity or make new songs, adding that it had no broader commercial ambitions and that audiences mainly wanted to hear its classics.
Laasner also said he finds it difficult to create elaborate marketing campaigns for his own work because that does not align with why he makes music.
