Mārtiņš Mieriņš will take a seat on Riga City Council after fellow Progressives member Mārtiņš Enģelis resigns for personal reasons, LSM reported, citing the LETA news agency.

According to the Central Election Commission, Mieriņš is next on the Progressives’ list and could be offered the vacant council seat. He told LETA that he had decided to accept the mandate.

Mieriņš previously served on Riga City Council during its preceding term, when his surname was Zvejnieks.

A special Riga City Council meeting has been scheduled for September 10 to decide on the early termination of Enģelis’s mandate.
