Kaija Velmet takes over Estonia’s Folk Culture Centre

Kaija Velmet became director of Estonia’s Folk Culture Centre on Monday, ERR reported.

According to Eili Lepik, deputy secretary general for cultural values at the Ministry of Culture, Velmet was selected primarily because of her extensive experience leading both cultural organisations and the cultural sector in local government.

“Kaija has the necessary qualifications and a sincere wish to work with the ministry, local governments and the sector to rethink the role of the Estonia’s Folk Culture Centre in preserving and developing folk culture, and to make the centre an even stronger strategic partner for local governments,” Lepik said.

Velmet previously worked for an extended period as head of the cultural field at Saue Rural Municipality Government. She has also served as director of the Pärnu City Orchestra.

“The Estonia’s Folk Culture Centre is an organisation I have encountered for years in my various roles. I have seen its importance from the perspective of local government, as a cultural organiser and as a participant in the song festival process,” Velmet said.

She said the biggest task over the next five years would be to preserve important traditions while recognising changes in society, new generations and new opportunities.

“I believe I can bring a fresh perspective to the centre’s work,” Velmet said.

Kalle Vister led the centre until autumn 2024, after which deputy director Kaja Liivak served as acting director.

Based in Viljandi, the Estonia’s Folk Culture Centre preserves and develops Estonian folk culture and intangible cultural heritage.
