Sinkevicius sees no major problem with Nauseda working from Madeira

Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius sees no essential problem with President Gitanas Nausėda working remotely from Madeira, LRT reported. He said remote work was possible both from Lithuania and abroad.

“The president chose this form of work and I do not see any essential problems in it,” Sinkevičius told reporters on Tuesday.

The Presidential Office said on Monday that Nausėda would stay on the Portuguese island of Madeira from August 3 to 10. During that period, he will work remotely and receive regular updates on the most important events in Lithuania.

The president does not formally have holidays, as presidential leave is not regulated by law.

Sinkevičius said he did not plan to take time off or work remotely this summer. He said he preferred working in person with his advisers and team.

The prime minister also said he would not initiate discussions on changing laws to regulate holidays for members of parliament and the president. He said lawmakers could take such an initiative if they deemed it necessary.

Parliamentary working and rest periods are currently regulated by the Seimas statute, which states that the parliament operates continuously. During parliamentary sessions, working hours are set by the Seimas board. The prime minister’s leave must be approved by presidential decree, while members of the government are entitled to a minimum of 20 working days of annual leave.
