Pilgrims begin 10-day journey from Salaspils to Aglona

Nearly 90 people are taking part in a pilgrimage organised by the Salaspils Roman Catholic parish, with some joining for only part of the route. LSM reported that the pilgrims set out on Monday morning and plan to reach Aglona in 10 days, walking up to 25 kilometres a day.

Several dozen people gathered in the morning sunshine outside the Salaspils Roman Catholic Church of Our Lady, Queen of the Rosary. Some planned to walk only from Salaspils to Ikšķile, while others came to see off relatives taking part in the pilgrimage.

The pilgrims carried a wooden cross, several flags praising the Virgin Mary, whose image is central to the Aglona celebrations, and the Latvian flag.

Young people were among the participants. One said the pilgrimage was a good way to regain strength before the next school year. An 88-year-old woman said this was her 18th pilgrimage.

A man from France planned to spend three days with the pilgrims. Catholics from Ogre were also joining the journey with the Salaspils parish.

One participant said the pilgrimage was a time dedicated to God, with every step forming part of that relationship. Others described it as a chance to step away from a fast-paced life, walk peacefully, express gratitude for what God gives them each day and pray for their families and Latvia.

The pilgrims will take part in the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary after arriving in Aglona.
