Estonian progressive death metal band Surgent released its second full-length album, “Sin Eater”, on Thursday, ERR reported. The album is the band’s first with vocalist Mathias-Erik Tempel and drummer Simo Atso, and follows its self-titled 2022 debut, which was named Metal Album of the Year at the 2023 Estonian Music Awards.
The release was preceded by the singles “Dismantle / Replace”, “Ruthless Logics” and “Enorcis”. The band also made a music video for “Enorcis”.
Surgent describes “Sin Eater” as heavy and complex, and says it does not shy away from challenging listeners. The band also says the album is more focused and cohesive than its predecessor.
“The last four years have been rocky because the lineup changed so much, but I feel we have finally found people who are all moving in the same direction and share a mission,” bassist Jüri Tarkpea said. He said Tempel’s more brutal vocals and Atso’s dynamic drumming had helped the band stay focused and take on greater musical challenges. While the debut had included every unusual idea the band had, he said, “Sin Eater” was more direct but still sounded like Surgent.
Guitarist Jaan Varts recorded and mixed the album at Sound Fortress Studios. Sofia von Hage and Thomas Eberger mastered it at Stockholm Mastering, and Regina-Mareta Soonsein created the cover illustration.
The band will present the album in Tallinn and Tartu in November.
