US to redeploy 50 troops from Poland to Pabradė
About 50 US troops currently in Poland will be redeployed to Pabradė, Lithuanian Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius said on Thursday, LRT reported.
The troops will be additional to those due to arrive in November, Sinkevičius told reporters. He said the move showed that the United States valued its partnership with Lithuania.
Asked about Lithuania’s proposal for a permanent US troop deployment, Sinkevičius said the process takes time and depends on US decisions about where to station its forces. He said Lithuania was pursuing the matter through political and diplomatic work.
Defence Minister Robertas Kaunas said on Thursday that Lithuania had prepared a package of proposals for a permanent US deployment but had not yet sent it to Washington, as institutions were still coordinating the details.
In early October, US President Donald Trump said the United States would consider the idea of establishing a permanent military base in Lithuania. Sinkevičius has said Lithuania is ready to host US troops permanently and cover the costs of a base if Washington decides to proceed. US troops have rotated through Lithuania, with breaks and varying numbers, every nine months since 2014.
