Police have determined that a driver under the influence of alcohol caused a fatal crash in Rēzekne municipality last December, LSM reported. A 17-year-old passenger in his BMW died.

The collision happened at about 8:16 a.m. on December 17, 2025, on the A12 highway in Spundžāni village, in Ozolmuiža parish. The BMW, driven by a man born in 2003, collided with a Volvo driven by a man born in 1975.

Police said the BMW driver lost control, entered the oncoming lane and struck the Volvo. Both drivers and a Volvo passenger were injured and taken to a medical facility.

Criminal proceedings have been initiated against the BMW driver over an alleged traffic rules violation while under the influence that resulted in serious injury or death. The offence carries a possible prison sentence of three to 10 years and a driving ban of five to 10 years. Police said no one is considered guilty until guilt is established in court under the law.
