Akmenė district, crime, police

A convicted man stabbed a police officer during a compliance check in Akmenė district on Monday night, and another officer shot him, LRT reported.

Both men suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to the Republican Šiauliai Hospital, Police Department spokesperson Ramūnas Matonis told ELTA. The officer was injured in the hand, while the convict was shot in the abdomen.

Police went to an apartment in the city of Naujoji Akmenė shortly before midnight after the administration of Pravieniškės II Prison asked them to check whether the 38-year-old, temporarily released from custody, was complying with a condition not to consume alcohol or other intoxicating substances. The check was part of a probation programme; probation officials did not take part.

The man, who had been convicted of arson, disturbing public order and causing minor bodily harm, recorded 0.49 parts per thousand on a breathalyser. He was with a 56-year-old man when the two officers arrived. The second man was detained and taken to a detention facility.

An investigation has been opened into resistance to police officers. The offence is punishable by community service, a fine, detention or up to three years in prison.
