NATO logistics troops have delivered more than 80,000 litres of diesel and 7,000 food rations since the start of the Resolute Reforger exercises in eastern Latvia, LSM reported. The drills test how forces can move and receive supplies far from their usual bases.
The exercises are taking place at 11 locations in eastern Latvia. One support point is at Jēkabpils airfield, where about 350 soldiers are helping sustain the brigade’s operations across a wide area. The exercises are scheduled to continue until November 8.
On Monday, generators were running at the airfield and military vehicles were being refuelled as cooks worked in a field kitchen. Lunch was beef steak for about 20 soldiers, while breakfast and dinner are served to around 400.
A sergeant responsible for food preparation and equipment said cooks must be ready to improvise, both at base and in the field. If an ingredient is unavailable, they are expected to find another way to prepare a meal, he said.
Kitchen staff start work at 5 a.m. so soldiers can have breakfast at 6.30 before heading out on assignments. Local businesses help supply fresh produce. Meals are only one part of the support needed by the troops.
