Dozens of people marched in Riga on Saturday to honor participants in Latvia’s 1919 independence battles, LSM reported.

The march went from the Armoured Train Regiment monument to Sudrabkalniņš, where participants gathered for a closing ceremony around a lit fire. Torchlight illuminated the streets along the route.

The event symbolically opened Latvia’s patriotic month, which begins on Sunday, November 1, with a torchlight procession and ceremony. The month includes national celebrations and the tradition of wearing red-and-white Latvian flags on one’s lapel.

Latvia’s army drove the Bermontians out of Riga on November 11, marked as Lāčplēsis Day.
