EKA gallery has opened an exhibition bringing together 40 works by Estonian and Finnish applied artists and designers, ERR reports.

“Chair, door, rose and spoon” explores the overlap between art, craft and design, focusing on applied art and unique design objects. Curators Kati Saarits and Hannah Segerkrantz say everyday objects can be distinctive and beautiful, while collectible pieces can also be used in daily life rather than kept behind glass.

“We want to show that unique design is an important field in Estonia, too,” Segerkrantz said. She added that a beautiful vase could hold flowers instead of simply being viewed in a cabinet.

The exhibition includes work by young artists and objects from museum collections, among them an installation-like seat by Tea Tammelaan. Saarits said Tammelaan’s approach was intriguing because she positioned herself as a furniture artist rather than a designer, and the seat offers a playful take on a functional object.

Also on display is a sculptural work by Finnish artist duo Hertta Kiiski and Janne Punkari. Saarits said it brings together a forgotten, period-defining household object such as a bread box with a poetic interpretation.

The exhibition is open at EKA gallery until November 22.
