Lithuania’s armed forces have received their first Thales GM200 MM/C multifunctional radar system, which is intended to strengthen the national division’s combat capabilities and help detect enemy indirect-fire systems, LRT reported, citing the Defence Ministry.
The ministry said the contract covers the radar’s acquisition, technical support and opportunities for further upgrades.
Defence Minister Robertas Kaunas said the system can detect enemy artillery positions and FPV drones, improving protection for troops on the battlefield. He said it would also help Lithuania’s armed forces work with NATO allies.
The radar is designed to locate enemy indirect-fire positions. Depending on its configuration and equipment, it can also monitor airspace and be integrated into air-defence systems.
The ministry said the system will work alongside other intelligence and fire-support capabilities to improve the division’s effectiveness and coordination of military operations.
The acquisition is part of cooperation between Lithuania and the Netherlands, which includes delivery, support and further development of the systems. The countries plan to continue working together on maintenance and support, as well as a programme of ongoing upgrades.
