Lithuania’s State Defence Council agreed on Thursday to introduce universal conscription for young men from 2032, LRT reported.

“We have decided that universal conscription will be implemented from 2032,” President Gitanas Nausėda told journalists after the council meeting.

More than 5,000 young people are currently called up for military service each year. Partial conscription was reinstated in Lithuania in 2015, citing increased threats following Russia’s annexation of Crimea.
