Estonian poet and writer Piret Põldver’s new book explores having a child through a personal lens, covering IVF, pregnancy and the complicated feelings associated with becoming a mother, ERR reports.
Where Do Children Come From begins with the IVF process, describing both its medical and emotional aspects. It also examines the everyday experience of pregnancy, including bodily changes and the possibility that pregnancy may not be comfortable or pleasant.
Põldver says the book is intended not only for women expecting a child, but for anyone interested in an aspect of women’s lives that has received little attention. It also considers how the body shapes relationships and self-perception. Rather than offering answers, the book aims to open up discussion about pregnancy, fertility treatment and motherhood.
The book was published by Kastani Tänava Kirjastus. Põldver’s previous works include the poetry collections Always So Suddenly, Corners of the Mouth and Pull, and the prose book Momentum. She received the Gustav Suits Poetry Prize in 2025 for Pull.
