Eleven Ukrainian photographers and photo and video artists are presenting work developed during an international residency programme at a joint exhibition that opened in Tallinn on October 15, ERR reported.

Waves of Creativity is a four-and-a-half-month residency for Ukrainian artists whose lives and work have been affected by Russia’s war against Ukraine. Participants worked in Saaremaa, Estonia, Joutsa, Finland, and Stuttgart, Germany. Nine artists took part in the main programme, while two artists with frontline experience joined for shorter periods.

The Tallinn exhibition brings together work developed during the residencies, including documentary photography, experimental photographic art, video art and installations. While not all the artists depict the war directly, many focus on personal experience, memory, a sense of home, everyday life, changing environments and people’s relationship with the world around them.

The works are on display at three venues. Okapi Gallery presents the artistic results of the residency. A pop-up exhibition at Vabamu museum connects the artists’ personal experiences with broader historical and social themes. A public-space exhibition on Balti Station’s Art Street brings contemporary Ukrainian photography into the city and makes it accessible to people who do not usually visit galleries.

The participating artists are Mykyta Bezus, Oxana Chorna, Iryna Klachek, Olia Koval, Herman Krieger, Ievgeniia Kupchan, Valentyn Kuzan, Oleh Pereverziev, Alina Prisich, Olesia Saienko and Elena Subach. Temuri Hvingija curated the exhibition, with Andrii Mur as co-curator.

The exhibition runs until November 20 at Okapi Gallery, October 20 at Vabamu and March 30 next year on Balti Station’s Art Street.
