Latvia issues yellow airspace threat alert in two municipalities
Latvia has issued a possible airspace threat alert for Krāslava and Rēzekne municipalities, and NATO Baltic Air Policing mission fighters have been activated, LSM reported, citing the National Armed Forces.
Residents received a cell broadcast message with instructions on what to do next. The armed forces said a yellow alert is informational and does not require immediate action, but urges people to stay informed about a possible threat to Latvian airspace. An orange alert indicates a detected threat and requires residents to follow instructions immediately.
People in the affected area who are indoors should shelter where at least two walls separate them from the outside. Drivers should assess the situation and continue to a safe place or leave the vehicle, move away from the road and seek nearby shelter.
If an explosion is heard, people should remain indoors and stay away from windows and doors. They should leave only after authorities issue an announcement or at least 10 minutes after the last explosion. When moving again, they should proceed slowly and assess whether their route is safe.
The armed forces also advised people not to post photos or videos on social media, to avoid spreading disinformation or revealing defence positions.
The National Armed Forces and NATO allies continuously monitor Latvian airspace and have strengthened air defence on the eastern border by sending additional units. The armed forces have said that incidents involving foreign unmanned aircraft entering or approaching Latvian airspace may recur while Russia’s aggression against Ukraine continues.
