Marijampolė is nearing completion of a new city monitoring system with 79 cameras that will use artificial intelligence to analyse public spaces and identify potential hazards, LRT reported, citing the municipality.
The system will include 53 panoramic cameras, five cylindrical cameras, 20 vehicle number-plate recognition cameras and one speed camera. Some existing cameras will also be integrated.
The municipality says the system will monitor and analyse events in real time, identifying people, vehicles, unusual incidents, gatherings and traffic congestion. Audio analysis technology will help detect sounds that may signal danger.
The system will also allow searches for vehicles by model or colour, as well as by number plate. The municipality said the software is being upgraded to connect the cameras in a shared monitoring and analysis system, and that data will be handled in accordance with personal data protection requirements.
“The most important thing is not the number of cameras, but how quickly we can understand what is happening and respond,” municipal administration director Nerijus Mašalaitis said in a statement.
