A three-year-old boy walked about two kilometres after leaving the Pasaulīte kindergarten in Bauska alone on Thursday, LSM reported. It was the second time in three months that children had left the kindergarten grounds. The municipality will assess the responsibility of staff and management.

The boy left his group and the kindergarten grounds unnoticed. According to kindergarten director Daina Kadiševska, he had gone to the cloakroom with a teacher, who stayed in the doorway while speaking to the other children. The boy got dressed and slipped away quietly.

Bauska municipality council committee head Raitis Ābelnieks said the child first went to his mother’s workplace but did not find her there. He then went to a shop and continued home, covering about two kilometres on his own. The incident ended safely.

In June, two three-year-old girls also left the kindergarten grounds after opening the gates. The municipality described the latest incident as unacceptable and said it would review the actions of the kindergarten’s staff and management.
