The bridge over the Lielupe River on the Liepaja highway will be closed to traffic from 7:50 p.m. on Monday, October 5, until 5:50 a.m. on Tuesday, October 6, LSM reported, citing the state-owned road company Latvijas Valsts ceļi.

Drivers should allow extra time and follow road signs. Detours will use the Ventspils highway (A10) and the Kalnciems–Kūdra road (P101); routes through Jelgava via the Jelgava–Kalnciems road (P99) and Loka highway; or the Jelgava highway (A8) and the Jelgava (Tušķi)–Tukums road (P98).

Corrosion has damaged the lower chord of the bridge’s steel truss, affecting its load-bearing capacity. A truss member was also damaged in an accident. The damaged structures will be reinforced with new steel elements. The work requires the bridge to be free of traffic loads.

Repairs will also cover the Liepaja highway between the bridge and the junction with the P98 road. The work includes milling the road surface, laying a new asphalt wearing course, rebuilding the shoulders and repainting road markings.

The contract, worth 1,996,855.91 euros, was awarded to Binders. BPU and IngWay are providing construction supervision. Roadworks are continuing at 58 sections of Latvia’s national road network.
