Estonian radio station Klassikaraadio will begin broadcasting a 12-part series about the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra (ERSO), sharing musicians’ memories of its history, ERR reported.

The series, “ERSO 100: Behind-the-scenes stories,” explores what life in the orchestra is like from a player’s perspective. Musicians from different generations recall their paths into the orchestra, colleagues, chief conductors, memorable concerts and tours, as well as difficult periods.

Nearly 700 musicians have played in ERSO during its 100-year history, which began alongside broadcasting in Estonia. The series traces that history through the players’ personal accounts.

In the first episode, airing on October 2, listeners will hear memories from violinist Hugo Schütz, part of the trio at the heart of the future orchestra, long-time concertmaster Rudolf Palm and orchestra veterans. Conductors Neeme Järvi and Toomas Velmet will also speak.

Journalist Kersti Inno, who has covered ERSO concerts and interviewed conductors, soloists and composers for Klassikaraadio for decades, created the series. It will air on Fridays at 18:00 and repeat on Sundays at 14:00. Katrin Maadik is the sound operator.
