British electronic music artist Kode9, founder of the Hyperdub record label and one of dubstep’s pioneers, will perform at Paavli Kultuurivabrik, a cultural factory in Tallinn, on November 13, ERR reports.

Kode9 is the stage name of Steve Goodman, who is from Scotland. Before focusing on music, he studied philosophy and earned a doctorate from the University of Warwick. His academic work explores sound, technology and culture.

In 2009, MIT Press published Goodman’s book Sonic Warfare: Sound, Affect, and the Ecology of Fear, in which he examines the effects of sound on human behaviour and emotions, as well as its use as a tool of power, threat and fear.

Goodman began working as a DJ in the 1990s, moving from psychedelic jazz and funk to jungle, and later to garage and dubstep. He founded Hyperdub in 2004. The label has released music by artists including Burial, DJ Rashad, Zomby and Fatima Al Qadiri.

Kode9 is regarded as one of the early figures who shaped dubstep. His important collaborator was the late MC and poet The Spaceape. Together they released the albums Memories of the Future in 2006 and Black Sun in 2011.

Kode9’s solo albums include Nothing from 2015, Astro-Darien from 2022 and Escapology from 2023.

Also performing on November 13 will be Polish drummer and composer Gary Gwadera, London artist Silvia Kastel, Bristol DJ Wash Electra, and Estonian artists Type1, Nikolajev and Susanna Raiend.
