Pärnu flood stabilises as pumping and recovery continue

Flooding in Pärnu has stabilised after heavy rain overwhelmed the city’s drainage system, ERR reported, although pumping and recovery work continue. Streets and roads were flooded and water entered buildings, while rainfall exceeded 100 millimetres and locally surpassed 120 millimetres.

The situation is being monitored and assessed by Pärnu city government, Pärnu Vesi, the Rescue Board and the Rescue Association.

“The heavy rain also affected our neighbouring municipality,” Deputy Mayor Sander Kilk said. Officials from Pärnu and Tori municipality inspected the most critical areas after meeting at the Rescue Board’s crisis headquarters.

Water levels in Pärnu are falling, but water is still flowing from Rääma bog. Pumps operated by the Rescue Board and the city’s drainage system are currently managing the situation. The Rescue Board will decide when pumping can stop.

The city government has asked residents to check on neighbours, acquaintances and older people and to report any need for assistance. Pärnu city’s information line, 444 8200, is open around the clock.

Temporary traffic arrangements remain in place. Drivers and other road users are asked to follow traffic signs and avoid areas where the effects of flooding are still affecting movement. Traffic arrangements may change, and roads will be reopened as soon as possible.

Kilk said cooperation between government agencies, municipalities and volunteers had been crucial during the crisis. Several rescue brigades from across Estonia travelled to Pärnu to help, while experts provided recent data and advice.
