Latvian teacher faces trial over 25 sex offences against nine children

A teacher from Engure has been charged with 25 sexual offences against nine children, and the case has been submitted to the Zemgale District Court, LSM’s news service reported, citing the Prosecutor General’s Office.

Twenty-one of the alleged offences are classified as sexual violence against a person under 16, while four are classified as inducing a minor to acts of indecency.

The accused, a man born in 1950, admitted his guilt, according to the report. Police proposed charging him in July over at least 25 alleged incidents of sexual violence against children over several years.

Between April 2023 and November 2025, the accused worked as a physics teacher and draughts club instructor. Prosecutors allege that he used his authority as a teacher and the children’s vulnerable condition to involve them in sexual acts.

Some of the alleged offences took place at the educational institution, including during draughts club classes. Others allegedly occurred during individual lessons at the accused’s home and on a school bus returning from competitions.

Prosecutors allege that the man used games and other pretexts to involve the children in sexual acts. He is also accused of touching children sexually against their will and carrying out indecent acts in their presence.

Sexual violence against a person under 16 is punishable by up to 15 years in prison and up to five years of probation supervision. Inducing a minor to acts of indecency carries a prison sentence of up to seven years and up to five years of probation supervision.

The accused is currently subject to security measures, including a ban on approaching a specified person or place and an obligation to report any change of residence.

The Prosecutor’s Office stressed that no person is considered guilty until their guilt in a criminal offence has been established according to the procedure set out in law.
