Krista, a mother and vegetable grower from Jelgava municipality, wants Latvia to secure more equal support for farmers and greater backing for families, LSM reported.
Speaking to LSM ahead of Latvia’s 15th Saeima election, Krista said she hoped the country’s agriculture sector would receive stronger support internationally. She said Latvia’s interests in the European Union should be advocated by stronger, more capable, knowledgeable and open ministers with a firm position.
She also called for subsidies, other payments and crisis assistance to be provided on an equal basis with those in other countries. Latvia’s farmers have long been kept at a disadvantage in terms of European agricultural support, she said, adding that this also affects the cost of locally grown food and the expense of producing it.
On behalf of children and families, Krista said she hoped Latvia would provide more support to families. She added that greater investment in healthcare and education would improve people’s lives.
