Estonia recorded nearly 18,000 traffic insurance incidents in first half

Estonia recorded 17,851 traffic insurance incidents during the first half of 2026, an average of 99 a day, ERR reported. The number rose by 14 percent from the same period last year, while the Jüri roundabout near Tallinn remained the country’s most frequent accident location, the Estonian Traffic Insurance Fund said.

Tuuli Pärenson, chair of the fund’s management board, said the figures showed that traffic accidents were an everyday reality in Estonia.

“An average of 99 traffic insurance incidents a day means that one occurs approximately every 15 minutes in Estonia,” Pärenson said. “Behind every incident are people for whom it means at least unexpected paperwork, and in the worst case injuries and long-term consequences.”

Fewer injury accidents, but more deaths

Police and Border Guard Board statistics showed that fewer people were injured in traffic accidents during the first six months of 2026, although the number of fatalities was somewhat higher.

There were 687 traffic accidents involving personal injuries across Estonia, 5 percent fewer than in the same period last year. The accidents killed 22 people and injured 849.

Taavi Kirss, head of traffic supervision at the Police and Border Guard Board, said the decline in accidents involving injuries was a positive trend, but there was no reason for complacency.

“A driver who enters an intersection against a red light or repeatedly overtakes on a highway should understand that at those moments they themselves are the greatest danger in traffic,” Kirss said. He added that such habits needed to change so that other people’s health and property were not harmed.

Jüri roundabout remains the leading accident location

According to the fund’s statistics for the past 12 months, the Jüri roundabout in Rae municipality recorded 135 traffic insurance incidents from the second half of 2025 through the end of the first half of 2026. The total damage was 360,000 euros.

The Ülemiste intersection in Tallinn followed with 111 incidents and 328,000 euros in damage. The intersection of Sõpruse Boulevard and Tammsaare Road recorded 101 incidents.

More than 40 percent of all traffic insurance incidents occur in car parks. Over the past 12 months, the largest number of insured accidents took place in the car park of Ülemiste Centre, with 163 incidents. The car park at Tartu Lõunakeskus recorded 100 incidents, followed by Tallinn’s Rocca al Mare shopping centre with 79.
