ERR reports that the Poco Ajamaja gallery has opened “Konkretiseerimine”, an exhibition marking the 85th birthday of Estonian artist Raul Meel and tracing his work from his breakthrough experiments in the late 1960s to the present.

Curator Jaan Heinsoo said the exhibition focuses on concrete poetry, which combines poetry and visual art. In concrete poetry, meaning is conveyed not only through words but also through visual experience, the rhythmic structure of words and symbols, the interplay of colours, repetition and silence.

Meel, born in 1941, is one of Estonia’s best-known avant-garde artists and an important European representative of conceptual art and concrete poetry. He has participated in more than 600 group exhibitions and 100 solo exhibitions, and is the only Estonian artist to have won an award at a leading international biennial.

The exhibition is open until October 15.
