Riga celebrates topping out of new Mežaparka primary school

Riga has held a topping-out ceremony for the new Mežaparka primary school at 2 Sudraba Edžus Street, LSM reports. The Riga municipality said it will be the first newly built school in Riga since the restoration of Latvia’s independence.

Construction began in summer 2025, and pupils are expected to start studying in the new building in autumn 2027.

Riga Deputy Mayor Edvards Ratnieks said the construction work was proceeding according to plan. The school will accommodate 468 pupils from grades one to six, with three parallel classes of up to 26 pupils each.

The school is expected to employ about 50 teachers and 20 technical staff members.

The grounds will include a central courtyard with outdoor classrooms, recreation and quiet areas, as well as a community garden with a small greenhouse. The plans also include playgrounds and sports fields, a football pitch with running tracks and a long jump sector, a multifunctional sports field, play and exercise equipment, and 119 bicycle stands.

Construction is being carried out by Torensbergs Ltd, while Prokrial Ltd is providing construction supervision. The Riga municipal Property Department is responsible for project management and implementation.

The total construction cost is 15.3 million euros, including value-added tax. The project is expected to receive five million euros in co-financing from the European Social Fund.
