Haus Gallery opens exhibition marking Uno Roosvalt’s 85th birthday

Haus Gallery has opened an exhibition looking back at different periods of Estonian artist Uno Roosvalt’s career, ERR reported. Roosvalt will turn 85 on August 22.

The exhibition focuses mainly on paintings, including powerful large-format works inspired by the artist’s lifelong sources of inspiration: nature and the northern coastline.

Roosvalt is known for interpreting natural motifs and for developing a distinctive artistic style. Realistic elements in his works combine with abstract stylisation, while their strong colour tones are both emotional and considered.

Born in 1941, Roosvalt studied art at Tartu Art School from 1956 to 1962 and graduated in painting from the Estonian State Institute of Art, now the Estonian Academy of Arts, in 1969. He has been a member of the Estonian Artists’ Union since 1975 and the Estonian Painters’ Union since 1992. In 2010, he was named an honorary member of the Estonian Artists’ Union.

Roosvalt taught at the Estonian Academy of Arts from 1970 to 2011, serving as an associate professor from 1989 and head of its painting department from 1985 to 1995. He has participated in exhibitions since 1968, including solo and group exhibitions in Estonia and abroad, among them in Finland, Lithuania, the United Kingdom, Germany and Belgium.

His awards include the Painters’ Union prize in 2000, the Konrad Mägi Prize in 2011, the Erik Haamer Art Award in 2018 and the Kristjan Raud Prize in 2019.

The exhibition at Haus Gallery is open until September 12. Another Roosvalt anniversary exhibition, titled “Homely Shores”, can be visited at Vabaduse Gallery until August 26.
