Foku Gallery opens joint exhibition by Hilla Kurki and Taavi Rekkaro

Foku Gallery in Tallinn has opened “What Should Be Felt,” a joint exhibition by Finnish artist Hilla Kurki and Taavi Rekkaro, ERR reports.

The artists explore personal history, touch and intimacy, as well as how people relate to images. Both are seeking new approaches in their practices, including a move from flat images towards greater spatiality. Together, their works create a dialogue between distance and intimacy, presence and memory.

In her “Clay Diaries” series, Kurki approaches memory through her family history and examines new ways of relating to traditions and heritage. Her photographs depict people alongside plants and other beings that appear to be reborn in the same form each season.

Rekkaro presents photographs and objects that treat photography as something that can be touched and that stores experience, making closeness part of the experience. The images reveal fleeting moments, inner doubts and attempts to understand oneself and one’s relationships with others. By observing everyday moments, the artist asks how one can be sure that one was there at all, and whether those moments truly happened.

The exhibition will remain open at Foku Gallery until September 26.
