Former President Valdas Adamkus said Lithuania’s priority should be to strengthen democracy and develop strategic partnerships with Germany and the Nordic countries, LRT reported.

Adamkus made the remarks on Tuesday in Turniškės during a meeting with Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius.

Sinkevičius said he valued Adamkus’ contribution to building the Lithuanian state, his promotion of political culture, his focus on social unity and his ability to bring people together around a common goal.

The prime minister also said that during his first working days he had spoken with the German chancellor, Polish leaders and the leaders of the Nordic and Baltic states about Lithuania’s aim to further strengthen its strategic partnerships.

The meeting also covered preparations for Adamkus’ 100th birthday celebrations. A photography exhibition by Antanas Sutkus is planned to open at the Palace of the Grand Dukes in late October. It will feature rare moments from the lives of Valdas and Alma Adamkus that have not previously been shown to the wider public.
