Klaipėda to celebrate 774th city anniversary

Klaipėda will celebrate its 774th anniversary on Saturday with historical activities, an awards ceremony and a concert at the city’s castle grounds and Theatre Square, LRT reports.
The celebrations will begin at noon with a ceremony to raise the Klaipėda city flag at the castle grounds. Afterward, Vilnius LITUA Rotary Club will donate to the city and the Museum of the History of Lithuania Minor a facsimile of the Quedlinburg Annals from 1009, which contain the first written mention of Lithuania.
A medieval town will operate at the castle grounds throughout the day. Visitors will be able to watch knights’ battles, try archery, learn medieval dances, explore the Curonians’ way of life and taste historical dishes.
In the evening, events will move to Theatre Square in the port city, where ceremonies will be held to award the titles of Klaipėda Cultural Master and honorary citizen of Klaipėda.
Philosopher and writer Arvydas Juozaitis will receive the title of Klaipėda Cultural Master, while academician Vladas Žulkus will be named an honorary citizen of the city.
A concert featuring Ingaja, Paulina Paukštaitytė and DJ Tomas Boo will follow. Organisers have invited participants to wear the red and yellow colours of the Klaipėda city flag. All events are free of charge.
