Firefighters were deployed 26 times across Lithuania in the past day to clear trees felled by strong winds from roads and power lines, the Baltic News Service (BNS) reported on Tuesday, citing the Fire and Rescue Department (PAGD).
Edita Zdanevičienė, a PAGD spokesperson, said the incidents were evenly distributed nationwide. Marijampolė and Utena counties each recorded five cases, Alytus four, Kaunas and Vilnius three each, while Klaipėda, Panevėžys, and Tauragė counties had two each.
One notable incident occurred in Kaunas on Piliakalnio Street near Napoleon Hill, where a tree fell across a railway crossing around 20:30. Firefighters removed the tree’s crown, which had blocked the tracks.
In Miklusėnai village, Alytus district, heavy rain flooded an outbuilding, threatening a nearby residential house. Firefighters pumped the water away using a fire truck and a main line, preventing further damage.
Additionally, in Prienai district, a tree struck by lightning caught fire near a care home. Firefighters extinguished the blaze.
According to the energy distribution operator (ESO), around 700 households were without power on Tuesday morning due to supply disruptions.
The Lithuanian Hydrometeorological Service forecasted scattered showers and thunderstorms on Tuesday, with northwesterly winds of 6–11 m/s and temperatures between 22–27°C. Wednesday is expected to be dry at night with possible brief showers during the day, while Thursday will see weak winds and temperatures of 23–28°C.
