Conservatives to discuss political situation and municipal elections at council meeting
Lithuania’s largest opposition party, the Homeland Union-Lithuanian Christian Democrats (TS-LKD), will hold a council meeting in Vilnius on Saturday to discuss the political situation and preparations for the upcoming municipal elections, LRT reports.
Party leader Laurynas Kasčiūnas said the meeting would assess the current political landscape, including the formation of a new coalition and TS-LKD’s proposals for national defence and other sectors.
The conservatives are also expected to confirm 12 candidates for mayoral positions. According to Kasčiūnas, major cities will announce their candidates in the autumn, but smaller regions such as Šiauliai will finalise theirs during Saturday’s meeting.
Direct elections for mayors and municipal councils are scheduled for February–March 2027.
The meeting will also address the party’s proposals to tackle demographic challenges. Kasčiūnas noted that extensive analysis has been conducted on Lithuania’s low birth rate and potential solutions, with plans to present these findings publicly in the coming weeks.
TS-LKD currently holds 28 seats in the Seimas, making it the largest opposition party.
