Man points handgun at police officers responding to suicide threat
A man in Lithuania’s Elektrėnai municipality pointed a loaded handgun at police officers after they responded to a report that he was threatening suicide, state broadcaster LRT reported on Wednesday.
The incident occurred around 6:36 p.m. local time when emergency services received a call about a 37-year-old man, born in 1987, who allegedly intended to take his own life and possessed a firearm. The caller abruptly ended the conversation, prompting officers from Vilnius County’s chief police commissariat to dispatch to the scene in Pastrėvio Street.
Upon arrival, the man—found to have a blood alcohol level of 2.85‰—drew a *Bersa Thunder 9 Pro* pistol and aimed it at the officers, holding them at gunpoint until they managed to disarm him. No shots were fired, and no injuries were reported.
A pre-trial investigation has been launched under Article 286 of Lithuania’s Criminal Code, which covers resistance to law enforcement. Authorities emphasised that threats or violence against officers constitute a criminal offence, punishable by fines, restricted freedom, arrest, or imprisonment for up to three years.
Police statistics show 31 pre-trial investigations for resistance against officers were opened in the first four months of this year, with 91 cases recorded throughout 2025. The force urged respect for officers’ work and reminded the public that aggressive actions carry legal consequences.
