Lithuanian president calls emergency defence council meeting over air security threats
Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda has convened an urgent meeting of the State Defence Council to address growing air defence challenges, state broadcaster LRT reported Monday.
The session, scheduled for Tuesday, will review recent drone incursions into Lithuanian and neighbouring airspace, assessing their impact on regional security. Officials will also discuss accelerating the deployment of an integrated air defence system, according to presidential advisor Ridas Jasiulionis.
Lithuania has faced repeated violations of its airspace by military drones in recent months. Last week, a “red code” air raid alert—requiring civilians to seek shelter—was declared in Vilnius and Utena districts due to an aerial threat. Civilian drone activity and smuggling balloons have also disrupted airport operations by entering restricted zones.
The State Defence Council, Lithuania’s top national security body, includes the president, prime minister, defence minister, and military leadership.
