Democrats for Lithuania remain united after Skvernelis withdrawal, says acting leader
The Democrats for Lithuania party remains united and focused despite the departure of its former leader Saulius Skvernelis amid bribery allegations, acting chairman Virginijus Sinkevičius told BNS on Tuesday.
“The party had reached a very positive momentum, where we were seen as the true centre-ground choice, and it will take time and effort to restore that—but I believe we can do it,” Sinkevičius said. He stressed that no core members had abandoned the party, adding that “on the contrary, there is now even greater cohesion.”
Sinkevičius confirmed that Skvernelis, who resigned as party leader following corruption accusations, is no longer involved in its activities. “He has essentially withdrawn from politics,” the acting chairman said, noting that while he maintains personal contact with Skvernelis, their discussions do not revolve around political matters.
The scandal has not deterred supporters or potential new members, according to Sinkevičius. The party recently held an event, Democrats Grow, welcoming new recruits and emphasising investment in leadership development. “We want to cultivate strong individuals who understand both politics and state governance—and can communicate clearly,” he said.
Asked whether he would seek to remain as party leader, Sinkevičius stated that the decision rests with local branches, which must nominate candidates by the end of June. “If the branches put me forward, I will certainly consider it,” he said. A party congress on 25 July will elect a new chairman, deputies, and board, alongside adopting a resolution on renewed political direction ahead of upcoming elections.
Founded in 2022 by a breakaway faction of the Lithuanian Farmers and Greens Union, Democrats for Lithuania currently holds 14 seats in the Seimas and counts nearly 4,000 members.
