Firefighters worked through the night to contain a peat bog fire in the Šepeta peatland of Kupiškis district, with around 4 hectares still burning in isolated pockets as of Tuesday morning, LRT reports.

Konradas Liekis, senior specialist at the Fire Protection and Rescue Department’s Situation Coordination Division, told ELTA that company employees had begun arriving at the site to assist with extinguishing efforts. “Weather conditions are currently favourable, and we hope to announce the fire’s localisation later today,” he said.

Ten fire trucks and ten units of heavy machinery remain operational at the scene. While smoke levels have significantly decreased, shifting wind directions and speeds may still carry larger volumes toward nearby residential areas, authorities warned.

The State Fire and Rescue Service (VPGT) reiterated earlier advice for residents to avoid outdoor exposure and keep windows closed. Further safety recommendations are available at lt72.lt.

In a social media update, the VPGT thanked all responders, singling out Kupiškis district municipality for logistical support, including meal provision for crews and fuel for equipment.

The fire was first reported at 13:23 on Monday after smoke was spotted near Bukėnai village. Initial estimates placed the affected area at roughly 15 hectares of the 50-hectare Šepeta peatland. A public alert was issued within a 15-kilometre radius, notifying residents of potential air pollution. The Environmental Protection Agency was also informed.
