The leader of Lithuania’s Social Democratic Party (LSDP), Mindaugas Sinkevičius, has said he intends to finalise the party’s position on its ruling coalition with the Nemuno aušra faction led by Remigijus Žemaitaitis within the next month, LRT reports.

“After long deliberations, I am inclined to close this question within the coming month—one way or another,” Sinkevičius told Žinių radijas on Tuesday. “The discussions must end. Any political move carries not just benefits but also certain losses or consequences.”

He added that coalition relationships are “never particularly pleasant or friendly” but must be maintained despite complications. Sinkevičius also confirmed plans to speak directly with Žemaitaitis, stating, “There hasn’t been an opportunity lately, but I will definitely do so. We must uphold the relationship, however complex it may be.”

Tensions within the coalition escalated after some governing partners in the Seimas opposed the establishment of a military training ground in Kapčiamestis. While Sinkevičius had previously pledged to clarify his stance at the LSDP congress last Friday, he did not disclose his personal position, instead committing to a decision “in the near future” after assessing all factors.

Criticism of the coalition with Nemuno aušra has also come from within LSDP ranks. Sinkevičius acknowledged “minimal” dialogue with the Democratic Union “For Lithuania” faction, a claim echoed by its Seimas elder, Lukas Savickas, who noted such limited contact has persisted for six months.

The current ruling coalition consists of the LSDP, Nemuno aušra, and the Lithuanian Farmers, Greens, and Christian Families Union.

Sinkevičius also stated he would not urge former Prime Minister Gintautas Paluckas to leave the LSDP’s Seimas faction, despite internal pressures.
