The Lithuanian presidency has launched an inter-institutional discussion on promoting German language education in the country, state news agency BNS reported on Thursday.

At the initiative of President Gitanas Nausėda, the Presidential Office has submitted proposals to the Ministry of Education, Science, and Sports to strengthen German language instruction. The goal is to increase its popularity among students as a first or second foreign language, expand German studies at universities, and establish an international school with German as the language of instruction.

The presidency also plans to contribute to developing a state-level programme for German language promotion, emphasising that the initiative aims to deepen bilateral cooperation with Germany. Relations between the two countries have grown closer in security, defence, economics, science, and culture, the statement noted.

Germany plans to deploy a brigade in Lithuania by the end of 2027, while both nations have intensified defence collaboration in recent years. Additionally, Lithuania’s upcoming cultural season in Germany (2027–2028) is expected to further strengthen ties.
