Lawyer for ex-wife of slain paramedic says she is “truly innocent”
The defence lawyer for Justina Gaigalaitė, the ex-wife of murdered paramedic Mantas Sadauskas, stated on Thursday that his client “is truly innocent,” as three suspects—including Gaigalaitė—were brought before Panevėžys District Court, LRT.lt reports.
Gaigalaitė, accused of intentional murder and unlawful deprivation of liberty, appeared in court covering her face and did not respond to journalists’ questions. Prosecutors have requested her pre-trial detention for up to three months.
Her lawyer, Vaidotas Sviderskis, told reporters after the hearing that Gaigalaitė “unequivocally denies” the charges. “Her statements are very clear and detailed. (…) Her position is unequivocally no,” he said, urging against speculation about her divorce from Sadauskas, calling such discussions “far too premature” while the investigation remains ongoing.
Sviderskis reiterated his belief in Gaigalaitė’s innocence, stating: “Justina, in my opinion—based on what I see so far—is truly innocent. At least, I currently have no evidence to suggest otherwise.” When pressed, he added: “As of this moment, based on the available information, [she is] completely innocent. Yes, absolutely. Must she necessarily be guilty?”
The lawyer acknowledged the “tragic situation” of Gaigalaitė’s past relationship with the victim but cautioned against assumptions, noting that while “certain connections” may raise suspicion, “there is a mountain of doubt that must be dispelled.” He declined to comment on reports that Sadauskas’ body was found in a home linked to Gaigalaitė’s new partner, stating he was “not aware” of the details and could not discuss them even if he were.
Sviderskis also suggested that the actual perpetrators of the murder may still be at large, though authorities have not publicly confirmed alternative theories.
