Hobusepea Gallery has opened Beginner’s Luck, an exhibition exploring the links between art and endurance sports, ERR reports. It brings together artists Sten Ojavee, Hanna Samoson and Mathias Väärsi, whose shared interests include long-distance hiking, running and cycling.

The exhibition considers endurance activities as creative, reflective and sometimes absurd pursuits. Both art and endurance sports can demand intense commitment, preparation and persistence, even when their purpose is not entirely clear to participants or observers. The show also explores the tension between seeking escape and embracing the discipline and physical and mental effort that such pursuits require.

Ojavee planned to begin a 4,270-kilometre hike on the Pacific Crest Trail on April 18, 2026. The route runs from the Mexico-US border to the Canadian border. A three-part video documentary looks back at the preparation for the hike and examines the contrast between planning, imagining the journey and reality.

Samoson explores the idea of love as a source of fuel that can be replenished through different attitudes and practices. She tests the effects of gratitude, compassion and forgiveness on the ability to continue a journey. Objects created through these practices form the artist’s personal equipment, with each representing a different attitude towards herself.

Väärsi’s works focus on competition and how the drive to achieve the best possible result shapes people’s choices and behaviour before, during and after an event. The three artists have also created several works together through shared time, conversations and exchanges of ideas.

The exhibition’s title work lets visitors follow the artists’ physical activity and movement throughout the show, as well as a competition between them scored in points. Participants can set personal goals and choose their own strategies. Their everyday activities are turned into a contest that visitors can watch live at the gallery.

The exhibition is open at Hobusepea Gallery until December 6, 2026.
