Turnout in Nalšios North by-election reaches 12.53% by 10 a.m.
Turnout in the by-election for Lithuania’s parliament in the Nalšios North constituency stood at 12.53% by 10 a.m., according to Central Electoral Commission data reported by LRT.
At polling stations on election day, 3.03% of voters had cast ballots. Another 2,699 voters, or 9.49%, voted early, at home or in healthcare and social care institutions.
Electoral Commission chair Lina Petronienė said officials had received reports of minor violations during the first hours of voting. One issue involved political advertising that may not have been fully labelled under updated European rules, she told LRT radio. The markings were corrected, and officials had not been informed of any serious violations.
Polling stations opened at 7 a.m. and will close at 8 p.m. Voters can cast ballots using a passport, identity card or driving licence.
Eleven candidates are running: Ignotas Adomavičius of Dawn of Nemunas; Giedrius Dainys of the Centre-Right Union; Gintautas Kindurys of the Lithuanian Farmers and Greens Union; Social Democrat Vladislavas Kondratovičius; Nikolajus Lebedevičius of the Lithuanian Regions Party; Maksimas Paukštė of the Freedom Party; Mėta Paulauskė of the Liberal Movement; Antanas Šakalis of the Democrats’ Union For Lithuania; Andrejus Šildiajevas of the Homeland Union-Lithuanian Christian Democrats; Viktoras Voroninas of the Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania-Christian Families Alliance; and Dalia Štraupaitė of the Union of the People and Justice.
The by-election was called after liberal MP Jevgenijus Šuklinas, elected in the constituency in 2024, died in late May. The commission revoked his parliamentary mandate in early June. Electoral law requires a by-election within six months after a single-member constituency MP’s powers end, except when less than a year remains until the next regular parliamentary election.
